As I have pointed out on the Theming contest forum, MyBBFans’ theming competition comes to a close in just seven days, on August 1st. This means themers have just one week to submit or finish their themes. You might want to hurry up if your theme isn’t ready yet. Good luck to everyone involved. It’s going to be a hard time to decide which theme wins.

PHPDocs and PHPXref for MyBB

PHPDocs
The generated PHPDocs provided by MyBB Central is a quick and easy way to find out the description of a particular function, its parameters, and the file in which the function is defined. The PHPDocs also give an overview of each class listing what variables and methods are in each.
PHPXref
The documentation generated from the PHPXref takes PHPDocs up a notch. This is provided both by MyBB Fans and by MyBBoard.de. You will be able to find the same function listing and description (by clicking Function List at the top of the index page, selecting a function, and then clicking the filename under “Definition”), the class listing and description (by clicking Class List at the top of the index page, selecting a class, then clicking the filename under “Definition”). However, PHPXref can go far beyond that.
In any function documentation, you will see a “X-Ref” link. Clicking on it will lead you to a list of locations where the function is used. Clicking on the line number on any of these “references”, you will be shown the exact line within the source code of the page where it is used. This is beneficial if you are looking for an example of how to utilize a function or class.
PHPXref also comes with a handy search function which lets you quickly find the information page for a particular class, function, variable or constant. The search can be found at the top-right of each page. The downside of this is that you must know the exact name of what you are looking for, or else the server will spit out an ugly error 404 message.
However, PHPXref also is extremely helpful if you are just browsing the MyBB code. If you notice on the left frame, there is an interactive file listing. Clicking on any file will show you an overview of the file, and anything it defines. Clicking on the “Source View” page will bring you to the actual source code of the page. Of course it is syntax-highlighted and all that, but if you hover over any function or constant, a popup will show you a description (if it is a function), where it is defined, and where it is referenced. Clicking on variables will show you a listing of where the variables are defined and referenced, as we’ve seen before.
PHPDocs and PHPXref go hand in hand if you are interested in the MyBB source code. PHPDocs provides simple documentation for functions and classes, and PHPXref provides you with further information on where things are defined and referenced.
Updates for the Theming Contest, Release Date Contest and MyBB Directory
Published by June 7th, 2007 in MyBB Fans and Contests. 1 CommentWe have seen many great threads in the Theming contest forum, and since many people may be having exams in June, the MyBB Fans team has decided that the deadline of the MyBB 1.2 Theming Contest be extended to July 31 2007. For those of you unfamiliar with the contest, we have 5 prizes up to $100 to give to the best five themes created in the theming contest. It is not too late to enter! See the contest section for more information about the contest.
Our “Guess When MyBB 1.4 Will Be Released” is still ongoing. We currently have just under 50 guesses submitted to the contest, so odds of winning are still pretty high compared to other lotteries and stuff out there 
In addition we are adding two additional guesses for each user, so every user will have a total of five uneditable guesses in the contest. See the contest section for more information about this contest.
Now an update about the MyBB Directory we have on our website: We are currently beta-testing a plugin script to grab statistics off of your forums. This should allow forums which are using a non-English language pack by default, or have modified their English language pack or templates to have their statistics on the directory. To get the plugin, please see this post.
You will be seeing some more interesting content on MyBB Fans in the coming weeks, including our launch a new feature on our site and it starts with the letter “p” (can you guess what it is?). We are also arranging for previews of MyBB 1.4 with the MyBB team, so get yourself ready for that!

We Want Your Themes!
Published by April 13th, 2007 in MyBB Fans, MyBB 1.2.x and MyBB Community. 2 CommentsMyBB is great. It has all sorts of nifty features that put other Bulletin Boards to shame, and a community of great people (you guys) who are always ready to lend a helping hand when another is in trouble.
Unfortunately there has always been a lack of themes for MyBB, and this is disappointing to say the least. Without a theme, your forum wouldn’t have the individuality that it should have. Instead, it would be one of many forums I have seen that still use the MyBB Default Theme.
Not that there is anything wrong with the default of course, and indeed it is perfect to start your fledgling forum off with. Soon however, your members will increase in number and your forum will start to take a unique shape…and you will need a unique theme to match it.
The lack of themes for MyBB makes this very hard to do, and we at MyBB Fans have decided that enough is enough. More themes MUST be made, and you guys are going to do it for us (because we’re lazy like that). Of course such a monumental task can’t just be thrust on you all like this, it just wouldn’t be fair, and so we have constructed a CONTEST to get you all in a competitive mood!
MyBB 1.2 Theming Contest
You mission (which you have no choice but to accept) is to create a theme for MyBB 1.2 that will be judged by a team of highly trained and intelligent people. The judges will mark your theme according to various criteria, and the community will also get a chance to judge the themes as well.
The top 5 themes will be awarded prizes, which range from $10USD to a whopping $100USD!!! Each winner will also receive a 1 year premium membership at MyBB Fans, and a lifetime @mybbfans.com email address which you can use to send commiserations / taunts / insults to the people who did not win.
If you are new to theming you can still enter (in fact this is encouraged) and you will received bonus points if this is your very first theme.

Did you ever notice this rather hidden link on the MyBB Fans directory? It’s small but mighty, so small most probably won’t notice it, and will dig right into the general listing of forums right away. Each forum can select multiple categories to place themselves in, as I’m sure you’ve noticed whilst adding your forum, but you might not have realized that you actually view forums based on their categories. Just another great feature in the MyBB Fans Directory!
