MyBB 1.2.10 is in beta

The MyBB Group has started beta testing MyBB 1.2.10, the next maintenance release in the MyBB 1.2.x branch.  The lucky few have already been selected.  It is unknown whether or not there will be subsequent “rounds” of beta testing since this is a minor release.

MyBB 1.2.10 fixes the bugs since the last maintenance release.  It will be the last scheduled maintenance release before MyBB 1.4.0, the major upgrade that everybody has been anxiously waiting for.

So expect to see MyBB 1.2.10 being released soon, marking one step closer to MyBB 1.4.0 :)

EXTRA! Extra!

Some of you may be interested what may be going on in the life of the MyBB Fans Staff (excluding me, I’m just the news guy) considering not much has happened with this website, nor the theme contest which is well overdue for a winner. I’ll also update you with information on MyBB.

10 Reasons Why One Chose MyBB

labrocca, an active user at the MyBB Community Forums came up with a list of 10 (actually 11) reasons why he chose to convert from vBulletin to MyBB.  Here’s what he posted (slightly edited):

1. vB isn’t free (obvious one I know)
2. vB skinning is difficult and often good skins cost money
3. vB has a bloated system and you can’t remove parts you don’t need
4. vB upgrading is an incredible hassle while MyBB has a near perfect upgrade system
5. MyBB has an excellent plugin system that if used properly requires no core file changes
6. Tikitiki is cool
7. MyBB has been steadily advancing it’s code base for resource efficiency
8. MyBB requirements are less than vB allowing for smaller sites to thrive on cheap hosts
9. AJAX features…yes I know vB has some too but MyBB uses them with efficiency and sensability
10. Quick learning curve and vB is a nightmare to understand. There are dozens of settings in vB that are plain ridiculous
11. Fast easy install…yes you do this normally just once but MyBB makes it really easy

Now in turn I ask you, what made you choose MyBB over another bulletin board software?

MyBB 1.2.9

The MyBB Group has released MyBB 1.2.9 to address two high risk security vulnerabilities.  It is recommended to update to 1.2.9 immediately.

If you haven’t noticed the MyBB Group has also started to provide plugins to patch the security vulnerabilities.  Easy huh?

The latest package, and the most up to date upgrade information can be found on the official MyBB website.

“Multi-Quote Posting, Quick Edit, Easy Profile Editing, Cool Away System, Easy To Use”

Are you wondering what users have to say about MyBB?  shadow82x posted a short review of MyBB on the MyBB Community Forums.

The review emphasizes the ease of use MyBB offers especially for setup and the front end, however, the Admin Control Panel was found to be daunting at first.  Overall shadow82x was impressed with MyBB.

PHPDocs and PHPXref for MyBB

If you are a developer of plugins or modifications for MyBB, or you are studying the MyBB code for fun, two resources may be of use to you.

PHPDocs

The generated PHPDocs provided by MyBB Central is a quick and easy way to find out the description of a particular function, its parameters, and the file in which the function is defined. The PHPDocs also give an overview of each class listing what variables and methods are in each.

PHPXref

The documentation generated from the PHPXref takes PHPDocs up a notch. This is provided both by MyBB Fans and by MyBBoard.de. You will be able to find the same function listing and description (by clicking Function List at the top of the index page, selecting a function, and then clicking the filename under “Definition”), the class listing and description (by clicking Class List at the top of the index page, selecting a class, then clicking the filename under “Definition”). However, PHPXref can go far beyond that.

In any function documentation, you will see a “X-Ref” link. Clicking on it will lead you to a list of locations where the function is used. Clicking on the line number on any of these “references”, you will be shown the exact line within the source code of the page where it is used. This is beneficial if you are looking for an example of how to utilize a function or class.

PHPXref also comes with a handy search function which lets you quickly find the information page for a particular class, function, variable or constant. The search can be found at the top-right of each page. The downside of this is that you must know the exact name of what you are looking for, or else the server will spit out an ugly error 404 message.

However, PHPXref also is extremely helpful if you are just browsing the MyBB code. If you notice on the left frame, there is an interactive file listing. Clicking on any file will show you an overview of the file, and anything it defines. Clicking on the “Source View” page will bring you to the actual source code of the page. Of course it is syntax-highlighted and all that, but if you hover over any function or constant, a popup will show you a description (if it is a function), where it is defined, and where it is referenced. Clicking on variables will show you a listing of where the variables are defined and referenced, as we’ve seen before.

PHPDocs and PHPXref go hand in hand if you are interested in the MyBB source code. PHPDocs provides simple documentation for functions and classes, and PHPXref provides you with further information on where things are defined and referenced.

MyBB 1.2.7 Released

As of two days ago, MyBB 1.2.7 has been released. As always we encourage everybody to upgrade, especially those with large forums.

We continue our tradition to direct you to the official MyBB site for the latest updates.

MyBB 1.2.6

Another security vulnerability has been patched and released by the MyBB Group named MyBB 1.2.6. As always we recommend that you update your forums (both MyBB 1.2.x and 1.1.x series) with this patch.

Please be reminded that the latest updates can be found on the MyBB official website, and we recommend that you register for the official MyBB mailing list in order to receive news of new updates instantaneously via email.

MyBB 1.2.5

MyBB 1.2.5 was released yesterday patching a moderate security vulnerability. It’s one (two if you count the version number change) simple find and replace, so as always we encourage all boards to apply the patch.

More information can be found on the MyBB homepage

We Want Your Themes!

MyBB is great. It has all sorts of nifty features that put other Bulletin Boards to shame, and a community of great people (you guys) who are always ready to lend a helping hand when another is in trouble.

Unfortunately there has always been a lack of themes for MyBB, and this is disappointing to say the least. Without a theme, your forum wouldn’t have the individuality that it should have. Instead, it would be one of many forums I have seen that still use the MyBB Default Theme.

Not that there is anything wrong with the default of course, and indeed it is perfect to start your fledgling forum off with. Soon however, your members will increase in number and your forum will start to take a unique shape…and you will need a unique theme to match it.

The lack of themes for MyBB makes this very hard to do, and we at MyBB Fans have decided that enough is enough. More themes MUST be made, and you guys are going to do it for us (because we’re lazy like that). Of course such a monumental task can’t just be thrust on you all like this, it just wouldn’t be fair, and so we have constructed a CONTEST to get you all in a competitive mood!

MyBB 1.2 Theming Contest

You mission (which you have no choice but to accept) is to create a theme for MyBB 1.2 that will be judged by a team of highly trained and intelligent people. The judges will mark your theme according to various criteria, and the community will also get a chance to judge the themes as well.

The top 5 themes will be awarded prizes, which range from $10USD to a whopping $100USD!!! Each winner will also receive a 1 year premium membership at MyBB Fans, and a lifetime @mybbfans.com email address which you can use to send commiserations / taunts / insults to the people who did not win.

If you are new to theming you can still enter (in fact this is encouraged) and you will received bonus points if this is your very first theme.

For more information please see the Contest Page.
