Directories, listings, topsites

In the recent days, two more MyBB directories and topsites have been opened to the public.

MyBB Games Topsites

The MyBB Games Topsites offers a topsite-geared listing of MyBB forums. Tracking clicks in and out surfers can easily see which forums are the most popular with other surfers on that site.

MyBBForums.Net

MyBBForums.Net has been opened. Although everything’s still being polished up, the topic of the site is quite clear: It’s another directory for MyBB forums.

MyBBForums.Net has a nice and bright theme featuring light blues and greens. One main feature this site has over our directory is that each forum has a corresponding screenshot, giving surfers a preview of the forum (although it probably will not be detailed enough to capture a summary of the actual content of the forum). The number of members on each forum seems to be tracked manually. This site also tracks how many clicks went out to each forum.

Conclusion

So far, I know of five forum listing sites dedicated to MyBB:

  • MyBB Fans: Our directory features statistics tracking, and an intuitive graphs to show your forum’s activity compared to other forums
  • MyBB Games Topsite: This forum listing is more of a topsite showing clicks in and out from individual forums.
  • MyBBDirectory.Com: MyBB Directory is basically a listing of websites based on a broad range of categories.
  • MyBBForums.Net: The newly opened site.
  • MyBB Community Showcase Forums: Offering shameless promotion of your site.

The MyBB community is evidently growing, and there are many places open where you can easily advertise your new MyBB forum.

MyBB 1.4 has Plugin Version Checking

The plugin system, introduced way back in MyBB 1.0, simplified the way modifications could be installed and uninstalled. However, if an administrator installed 10 different plugins, he/she would have to check each of the plugin’s websites to see if any required updating.

MyBB 1.4 will offer a centralized way of checking your plugins for an upgrade. Tikitiki talks about this new feature on his blog. Of course this will only work if the plugin author has submitted his plugin to MyBB Mods and has made the plugin compatible with the version checking system.

Will we be seeing an automatic plugin downloader soon? This seems one step closer to it :)

MyBB Games also has a comment about this new feature.

Who needs a Thread Description?

I’ve been quite strongly against the idea of having a Thread Description implemented into MyBB.

Some people are already having a hard time writing a good Thread Subject, I don’t think that having a Thread Description would make it any better. On the forums I’ve seen thread descriptions enabled, the only memory I have of those are either repeats of the thread subject, or just useless text such as “help me”, and that for 80% of the threads, the author was too lazy to add a description.

From my perspective, this “feature” isn’t really used, or it’s rarely used correctly. The thread subject can allow up to 255 characters, so any normal thread subject should fit. Those are my 2-cents on why I don’t want this feature to be implemented. :)

Guess and Win! — When will MyBB 1.4 be released?

We are proud to reveal our second contest here at MyBB Fans: Guess when MyBB 1.4 will be released.

The user who guesses the closest to the actual date will get to choose one of multiple prizes generously sponsored by the staff of MyBB Fans.

Everybody’s welcome to enter into the contest, so don’t forget to tell your friends :).

Please do not post your entries here — they will be deleted. Please enter your guesses on the Contest Page
